Creative Movement

Registration for the 2025-2026 season will open to new students in June, 2025.

MHSB offers creative movement classes for children aged 3 to 6. Young students will be taught an appreciation of movement and music in a caring and relaxed environment. Emphasis is placed on enjoyment, expression and the learning of simple pre-ballet concepts and steps.

LEVELS OFFERED

Pre-Ballet (children in nursery school): 3 to 4 years of age
Pre-Primary (children in junior kindergarten): 4 to 5 years of age
Primary (children in senior kindergarten): 5 to 6 years of age
Ballet 1 (children in grade 1): 6 to 7 years of age.

Tuition fees include:

26 / 27 weeks of instruction from Sept until April
MHSB uniform (bodysuit, tights, and ballet slippers)
Costume rental
Tickets to the final performance

Ballet

The following classes are attended twice per week:

At MHSB, once children reach 7 years of age they follow the more structured format of a traditional ballet class.

The Martha Hicks School of Ballet teaches the Cecchetti method of ballet. The solid unmannered Cecchetti base enables dancers to embrace any choreographic style.

Creativity continues to be encouraged as sense of presentation and artistry is developed. Emphasis is placed on the more technical aspects including posture, coordination and muscular awareness.

Every other year MHSB prepares eligible students for ballet exams in the Cecchetti syllabus.

Dedicated older students are required to come to class twice a week and will have the opportunity to be considered at 12 years of age or older for Pointe work. It is offered to advanced students when they have developed the necessary strength in the body, legs and feet.

For older, experienced students it may be necessary to undergo an assessment to ensure placement in the appropriate level.

Levels Offered

Ballet 2: 7 to 8 years of age
Ballet 3: 8 to 9 years of age
Ballet 4: 9 to 10 years of age

Regular Stream - must attend 2 times a week and will be eligible to complete an exam

Ballet 5: 10 to 11 years of age
Ballet 7: 11 to 12 years of age
Ballet 8: 12 to 14 years of age
Ballet 9: 13 to 15 years of age
Ballet 11: 14 to 16 years of age
Ballet 12: 15 to 18 years of age

Recreational Ballet

MHSB offers Recreational Ballet to dancers who have either little or no training, or those who wish to limit their ballet training to just once a week, and prefer a slightly less serious approach to ballet. Basic technique is covered, with an emphasis on posture, musical interpretation and an appreciation for movement.

Levels Offered

All levels attend classes once per week

Junior Ballet Rec. 10+ years of age with 3+ years of experience
Senior Ballet Rec. 13+ years of age with 4+ years of experience

Pointe

Pointe work is an important addition to a ballerina's dance training. This is offered to the serious student who has reached at least 11 years of age. MHSB offers an introductory pointe class for dancers that have been in ballet twice a week for several years. Students are individually assessed for strength and control before being accepted into the Pointe program.

Levels Offered

All levels attend classes once per week

Pointe 1: 12+ years of age with 1 year of experience or more
Pointe 2: 13+ years of age with 2+ years of experience
Pointe 3: 13+ years of age with 3+ years of experience
Pointe 4: 14+ years of age with 3+ years of experience

Jazz

The MHSB Jazz program was developed in 1995 and has proved tremendously popular. Children only need to be five years of age in order to start taking jazz. The pace is lively and the atmosphere is fun as children learn steps and combinations to recorded, current music.

Jazz classes help develop the ability to interpret contemporary rhythms and dance forms. Although not mandatory, students are encouraged to take ballet in addition to jazz.

Junior Jazz: 7 to 10 years of age
Inter Jazz 1: 10 to 13 years of age
Inter Jazz 2: 12 to 14 years of age

Tap

Registration for the 2025-2026 season will open to new students in June 2025.

With a focus on fun but with the challenge of rhythm and movement together, tap has been an increasingly popular dance style. Children only need to be five years of age in order to start taking tap. No prior dance background is needed, just the ability to find and keep a beat.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance incorporates ballet and natural movement. This is offered to the older student preferably with some ballet experience.

Hip-hop, although originally based on break dancing and street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music, has now evolved in the dance studio with a more commercial feel to it and can be danced to a wide range of current, popular music. Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street.

Hip Hop is a very athletic form of dance, and although flexibility and grace are not always an obvious element, strength and coordination are very important and stressed in the studio. Hip Hop often has a “freestyle” element to it, which encourages improvisation.

Hip Hop is a very fun dance form - but don’t be fooled - it can be intricate and aerobic! It’s a great way for students to enjoy dance - without a lot of prior experience.

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre tells a story through dancing, singing and acting. It blends these three together and is sometimes referred to as the “Triple Threat”. This includes how to breathe and sing properly, a basic dance and movement vocabulary and developing stage acting techniques. Students will work on all elements with the goal of creating a group routine. Musical Theatre is an ideal way for the less experienced student to be introduced to dance. Previous numbers have included pieces from musicals such as Annie, Oliver, Wicked, Kiss Me Kate and Catch Me if You Can.

Junior Musical Theatre: 7 to 10 years of age
Inter Musical Theatre: 11 to 13 years of age
Senior Musical Theatre: 14 to 18 years of age

MHSB Company

MHSB Company is an additional performance and competitive team at The Martha Hicks School of Ballet. Outside of regular classes, Company is an amazing opportunity for dancers to not only improve their technical skills, but to grow as individuals, deepen friendships and learn lifelong lessons.

Throughout the year, students will work with guest choreographers and partake in workshops that will fortify technique and optimize creativity. We have many fresh and exciting plans on the horizon for the 2025-2026 season.

We are always looking to elevate and expand our team. As of this year, we are opening Company up to students as young as age 7.
